Juniors
We are nearing the end of our formal ISA training course which has taken place over the last ten weeks beginning in May. Just over 50 juniors have enjoyed the courses and hopefully will continue to sail throughout the rest of the season. Many thanks to our resident instructors Aine and Clare and our visiting instructors Kevin and Paul for excellent tuition and for making it fun.
If you would like further information on junior sailing at Rush SC please contact the Junior Organiser, Jacqui Mc Crum at 086 854 2220.
Junior activities 2010
The club has a good active junior membership of just over 50 children and teenagers and it is great to see them all having fun on the water and enjoying themselves. A number of the teenagers persisted through the winter and provided excellent challenges to the adult sailors during the Laser chill series.
Some of them have been traveling to participate in the various Laser Championships throughout the country; Brian, Ciaran, Clara, Cameron and Sean; and have represented Rush SC excellently at events in Baltimore, Schull, Cushendall and Wexford.
We joined forces with our neighbours in Skerries SC and Malahide SC to provide coaching on a regular basis throughout the winter and this has worked well with each club providing its own unique challengers to the junior laser team.
At the Skerries regatta in May, a very exciting contest took place in the Laser races with Clara Hynes eventually emerging the victor and Brian Carthy taking second, well done to both.
Howth YC also supported us in allowing Noelle and Lisa participate in specialised feva coaching during the Spring time, which they thoroughly enjoyed and they hope to build on this training and be the first Rush SC participants in the Feva National Championships later this summer.
Well done to all of those that took on courses this year. Huge progress has been made on the sailing front and great fun had by all. We had one very special session with 5-7 year olds on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon to introduce them to the boats and water. Many thanks to Aine who gave up her Saturday to do the session and to Meabh Grogan, Rian Kelly, Muriel O’Hare and David Kelly for their help on the water.
Juniors sail on ……
There has been a steady group of laser and feva, ‘senior’ junior sailors participating in the ‘chill’ series since it started in November, which has been great to see.
In addition a number of them did an afternoon of fitness training at Sports Med Ireland in Kildare Street. The main focus of the training was to provide training which would improve their sailing and also looked at injury prevention in other sports and in life in general.
The laser group also participated in race training with sailors from Malahide YC at Broadmeadows before Christmas. They will start this again in March and we are hoping to welcome the junior sailors from Malahide to Rush SC for one of the sessions. In addition the feva team are hoping to link up with other feva sailors in Howth YC to gain some racing experience over the Easter period.
One ‘senior’ junior who has had a blast over the last few weeks is Sean Paul White who has now been selected for the Leinster Laser squad for 2010. He travelled to Hyeres in France over mid-term and participated in the Mediterranean Laser Championships. This event was held at C.O.Y.C.H. sailing club (www.coych.org). At one point Sean Paul held a very credible position of 33 out of 93 boats. Standards were very high and the conditions were a bit wild at times, but he thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We wish him all the best with his training over the coming months.
Most of the ‘senior’ juniors are doing Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate exams over the coming months so we wish them all the best with their studies and hope to see them all at the club during their breaks.
Courses
Courses are provided in accordance with the Irish Sailing Association (ISA) Small Boat Sailing Scheme for junior members of Rush Sailing Club.
These are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings commencing in May each year. Participants must provide their own boat and this must be fully insured before sailing can commence.
