December 2010 Update on whats happening
The Bingo and Wheel of Fortune 05/12/2010 and Santa's visit 12/12/2010 raised €1780.00 for Rush Senior Citizens. Thanks to all who organised and ran the events and to all who supported. A big thank you from Santa to the children and parents who left gifts under the tree for the needy, these have been sent on to Barnardos for distribution.
Some pictures of Santa's visit will be posted on the website gallery page. If any parent would like a high resolution A4 print on Premium Lustre photo paper, take note of the number of the image from the website and Jonathan will print it for €7.50, proceeds to the RNLI.
The Christmas sponsored sail is going ahead, weather permitting, on 19/12/2010. This, along with the Christmas Day sponsored swim will be in aid of Irish Cancer Society. If you would like a sponsorship form for the swim/sail please pick one up in the clubhouse at the notice board area or alternatively contact Jacqui at 086 8542220. If you don't feel energetic enough to do either and would like to sponsor someone please contact Jacqui also.
The Laser Chill Series Part 1 has concluded. Patrick Boardman was the winner followed by Áine Carroll, and Cameron McCrum. In the under eighteens Cameron leads followed by Ciaran Hand, and Brian Carthy. More in the newsletter.
To the yachties. Vincent McCormack is trying to organise a regatta in Cascais, Portugal in February. A yacht charter company that specialises in organizing regattas has six one design 35 ft racing yachts there. Vincent is hoping to get a team of six for each boat. To make things a little more interesting, ideally the 6 teams would be from different clubs. The cost of the trip would be €500, which includes flights out on Thursday, four hours racing on the Friday and four hours on the Saturday. Relaxation time on the Sunday and fly back Monday. Storm takes honours in Autumn League in Howth
Storm, the cruiser, owned by the Kelly family took 1st place in the IRC 1 Autumn League at Howth Yacht club. This was a hard fought battle over a six week series and they were chased to the end by Equinox and Crazy Horse from HYC. But the team, Pat, David, Ronan, Paul and Paddy Kelly, Sean, Mark Ferguson, Kevin Sheridan and Paddy Dillon battled it out and held their nerve as the contest went down to the last day. This victory was particularly sweet, as back in 1997 Storm had won the Autumn League for an hour and then lost it through a protest. The protest was subsequently withdrawn but the discussions continued until 9.30 pm that night and came down to a race committee vote. Although they were bitterly disappointed, they 'got back on their horse' and continued to challenge until they achieved victory yesterday. Celebrations ensued which were well deserved. For more details Click Here
To win the series they had 4 race wins out of 6 and two 2nds. In addition, Storm flying under the Rush Burgee also won the HYC Autumn League mini series , and achieved 1st's at Rush SC, Malahide and Skerries regattas, together with a 3rd place in the Scottish series in Scotland in May.
Well done to Pat and all the crew of Storm on all their successes this year. They are not a group to sit on their laurels for long and according to Pat (who has been racing for 28 years!) there is already a programme in place for 2011 with trips to Torbay and participation in the J European Cup. We wish them evey success and hope that the Rush burgee continues to fly so successfully into the future !
Mermaid Youth Champion 2010
On the 12th September, 2010 nine mermaids helmed by youths took to the water for the Mermaid Youth Championship. We were delighted to welcome the visiting boat from Skerries, helmed by Sinead Boylan, with the other boats helmed by Andre Berg, Alan Butterly, Eoin Butterly, Ruairi Grimes, Clara Hynes, Rian Kelly, Freya Mc Crum and Lynn White. Three races took place and it was a very hard fought battle but Eoin Butterly helming Innocence emerged the overall victor taking the Mermaid Youth Championship. Ruairi Grimes was runner up in Wild Wind with Andre Berg taking third place in Swallow. Andre was also awarded the Peter O'Rourke trophy for the highest placed Under 18 helm. Well done to all who competed.
Many many thanks to the Mermaid owners who very kindly and willingly lent their boats and provided support to their helms on the day. Well done to all, in particular, Rian and Lynn who helmed for the first time together with the youngest helm of the day, Freya. We hope to everyone competing again in 2011. As usual particular thanks to the committee boat and OD's for the day, Jim Carthy and Aine Carroll assisted by Marguerite Carthy and Kevin Whelan. Thanks also to all who did rescue and helped on-shore particulary Ger Whelan, Mary Bollard and Ann Carthy.
Congratulations to Eoin Butterly, RSC on becoming the Mermaid Youth Champion. Full results

Inter Schools Regatta 2010
Ten RSC juniors travelled to Sutton Dinghy club for the annual All Ireland Inter Schools regatta on the weekend of the 25th/26th September, 2010 - Alan & Erica Ruigrok, Clara Hynes, Ciaran Hand, Andre Berg, Cameron & Freya Mc Crum, Brian Carthy, Lisa Coleman and Lynn White. 165 sailors took part in 132 boats with 48 teams and 15 classes of boats. So this was a big challenge for those RSC juniors taking part for the first time.
Saturday was a bit wilder than expected but the two races were completed successfully. Bright and early Sunday morning everyone returned but the water was like glass with not a breadth of wind anywhere. However all finally got to the start line and after an hour and a half at the start line the racing was abandoned. During that time however much fun was had by all playing pirates, capzising etc. So all returned with a smile on their faces.
Alan Ruigrok was the winner of the Davidson Memorial Individual trophy. On the teams front Loreto Balbriggan (Erica Ruigrok and Clara Hynes) received medals for 4th place whilst Catholic University School (CUS) Dublin (Ciaran Hand and Oliver Keenan) got medals for 5th place. Well done to all the trophy / medal winners and to all who competed and represented their schools and club magnificently. A good fun weekend was had by all. Click Here for results.

RSC sailors out in force – trophies, broken masts – read all about it !
Two broken masts, a broken tooth (from a biscuit !) and a 2nd (Jim Carthy) 3rd (Paddy Dillon) and 4th (Anthony Carthy) were all reported from the Mermaid Nationals which were held in Foynes during the first week in August, where a very enjoyable week was had by all. Well done also to junior RSC member Eoin Butterly who was a runner up in the Crew Race. More details at www.dublinbaymermaid.com
At the Skerries regatta in July there was a very hotly contested mermaid race with Jim Carthy eventually being pronounced the victor with Paddy Dillon in 2nd place. Pat Kelly & crew took first in the Cruiser class with Storm with a 2nd in Saturday's races. Good performances were put in by the juniors in the Laser race with Ciaran Hand 4th, Cameron Mc Crum 5th and Brian Carthy 6th. Another junior Freya Mc Crum competed in her first regatta courtesy of Patrick Boardman in his mermaid over the two days. On the same weekend over in Sutton other juniors were competing: Clara Hynes getting 2nd in the laser 4.7's, while Noelle Leonard and Lisa Coleman got 4th in the Feva class.
At the Howth junior regatta Clara got 2nd in the 4.7's, a position she also achieved at the Clontarf junior regatta. Meanwhile Noelle and Lisa changed boats and received a 1st in the Topaz class (their first outing in this boat at a regatta so well done!), whilst Meabh Grogan got a prize for 'excellent effort' in her first regatta in a laser.
The laser juniors were out in force again at the Connaught Laser Championships which were this year held in Dun Laoghaire with Clara getting 18th in the 4.7's. In the radial class Sean Paul White got 14th with Brian Carthy 42nd, Cameron Mc Crum 44th and Ciaran Hand 45th.
Two RSC sailors took part in the round Ireland yacht race – Paddy Dillon on Raging Bull a cruiser from Skerries and junior sailor, Sean Paul White on Joker 1 a Sigma 38 from Dun Laoghaire. A great experience – for more details see http://www.roundirelandyachtrace.ie.
On the international circuit Alan Ruigrok (who has been passing on tips throughout the summer to the junior lasers) achieved 44th place in the Gold Fleet at the World Laser Youth Championships at Largs in Scotland. His sister Erica got to wear the coveted Irish green jacket at the European Optimist championships where Team Ireland achieved the best European results for 10 years.
The ISA courses are completed for this year and sailing has continued on a Thursday night for the juniors. This unfortunately will finish soon with the school year about to begin in a couple of weeks. However we expect that many of the 'senior' juniors will return for the chill laser series and may be joined by some new hardy juniors.
Pipe Tow Woes!
As any of you who have been down at the club lately will have noticed, the view from the sailing club looks extraordinarily bare for the time of year, with not a cruiser in site. If you want to see what I mean, have a look at the pictures of Junior sailing on the 6th and 15th of July on the gallery page. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this story, five 240 metre sections of 1 metre diameter pipe are being assembled and fitted with concrete collars in the estuary. These are fitted with end plates, so they float and are then to be towed out by a tug, and submerged into a trench on the seabed, where they will form the outfall of the sewage processing plant under construction in Portrane. This has necessitated the removal of boats from moorings east of and close to Rogerstown pier, and the dropping of some moorings to create room for the tug to manoeuvre.
The construction company, SIAC, have arranged for boats to be accommodated in Malahide Marina while work is going on. Originally this was for the week of any planned tow, but they have now agreed that it will be simpler for all concerned to cover all boats until the works are finished as they cannot predict when they will be able to tow with any certainty and do not wish to pause in the process, unless forced to do so by the weather.
The whole process is now fairly seriously behind schedule, given that two strings of pipe were to be towed in mid June, the remaining five to be completed in July. As this is written (Friday 16th July) the first string of pipes is tethered to a line of piles in the estuary, waiting to be towed out when the weather permits, which looks like Tuesday 20th at the earliest. This will presumably be early in the morning, as high water is at 07:30. It is hard to see the process being completed much before the end of August, but watch this space...........
It's an ill wind that blows no good, as they say, the Juniors have had a ball these last few weeks, with no big boats getting in their way. The ten weeks of Summer Training are now over, but it is hoped that their will be lots of participation on Thursday evenings, when there will be rescue cover for juniors who wish to continue sailing, though no formal instruction.

Christmas Swim
On the chilliest Christmas day for years between 20 and 30 swimmers took the plunge into the shallow calm waters of the estauary. It was so cold and frosty the slipway had to be sanded down to allow the swimmers get to the water in safety. Led by Packer Thorne the group charged into the water to huge cheers from the onlookers. All safely returned to the clubhouse for delicious soup and mince pies. Thanks to Ann, Marguerite and Jenny. First indications are that almost €4,000 may be raised, which coupled with the sailors €1,000 would make a total of almost €5,000 for the charity. Well done to all !
Christmas Sail
On Sunday 20 December, 2009, with temperatures reaching a high of 2 degrees, twelve sailors, both adults and juniors, took to the water for the Christmas sponsored sail in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.
As the conditions were a bit tricky it was decided that the race would be abandoned and instead a fun sail took place with sailors pairing in the lasers, with three in Des Jones' Laser 2000. Well done to the rescue who, were thankfully not called into action, but had to stay the pace on the water in the freezing conditions.
All returned safely to the Clubhouse for 'aunty ann's soup' and delicious goodies made by Ann and Marguerite. A total of €1,010 was collected by the sailors for the charity. Derrie Carthy on behalf of the charity expressed sincere thanks to the sailors, support team, and the Club for this excellent support, which is very valuable. See Photo's Here
2009 REGATTA WEEKEND
In spite of seriously un-promising weather, the Regatta turned out to be a great success. A stiff off-shore breeze made for challenging conditions for the Mermaid open on Saturday and even more so for the Juniors who were competing in Lasers, Picos and a Viva. This was the first time the juniors have been represented in Regatta sailing for some years, so congratulations are due to all concerned.
John Rooney sailed a storm in his Laser to finish first
in the Laser class, followed by Clara Hynes.
In the Picos class, Brian Carthy soldiered on where the feint hearted did not dare.
It really was very tough out there, so hats off to anyone who had the courage to keep going!
In the Mermaid Open, there were a few breakages early on Saturday, but things settled down to some seriously exciting racing. In the second race, One of the boats from Foynes was on the wrong side of the line on the final minute of the start sequence, and did not go around the end of the line to start, and so was given an individual recall. By the time the race
started, Paddy Dillon and crew were ahead of everyone else on the line, and incorrectly assumed that the recall flag applied to them!. Back they came after a perfect start on the line, to restart at the back of the fleet. Little daunted, they rounded the weather mark and up popped their spinnaker, where the early boats around the mark had not dared to risk it.
As a spectator on the committee boat, the rest of the race was a thrilling spectacle as Wild Wind tramped up through the fleet. They never put a foot wrong, handling the conditions with practiced polish, pulling off one of the most spectacular victories the Bay has seen in a long time. Jim Carthy was all set to give them a run for their money, but a spinnaker halyard let him down. There may have been a bit of luck in it, but it was a well deserved win from spectacular sailing by the crew of Wild Wind, a race that will be talked about for along time to come.
In the cruiser racing on Sunday, the Kelly Gang walked away with as expected, in spite of the best efforts of Matt Davis and crew in Barrafundle to get their own back after Storm swept the board at the Skerries Regatta. Second behind the Kelly’s is doing all right guys!
Noel Ruigrok’s Emeljia came in a very respectable third place on the line, beating Premier Cru. Mind you, he did have our illustrious Commodore on the rail to keep her upright in a gale!.
In very difficult conditions, Liam Dineen did a masterfull job as OOD, laying great courses, and getting everything going on time in spite of the heavy weather. The crack was great in the Club afterwards as well!
For detailed results look at the Fixtures page. Lots more pictures of the events and the Prizegiving in the gallery.
Congratulations to Paddy Dillon, Mermaid National Champion ‘09
Paddy Dillon and crew Johnny Dillon and Rory Grimes on Wild Wind are the 2009 National Champions. Paddy scored one first, three seconds and a third to emerge at the head of the fleet after five races. This is the fourth time that No. 131 ‘Wild Wind ‘has won the Nationals. Built in Dun Laoghaire in 1964, No 131 was originally named Paula. She won the National Championship in 1968, based on cumulative regatta results, and won again in 1970 and 1971 in the first two Mermaid weeks in Skerries and Wexford. Paddy renamed her when he bought her in 2007.
Enda Weldon in My Di also sailed a great championships, with crew Ian Price and Cara McGauley, just 0.25 of a point behind Roger Bannon. Congratulations also to Eoin Butterly who won the Crew Race for the second time in Anthony Carthy’s ‘Innocence’, ably assisted by Anthony himself and Marguerite Carthy. For more on the championships, including pictures, see the website Here

Pat Kelly Sailing a Storm!
Pat Kelly and his crew have been having great success in their new STORM a J109. After a few races on the east coast to get the hang of the boat, the lads (David, Paul, Patrick, Ronan, Mark, Kevin, Monty, Dave and Pat himself) headed down to Fenit for the IRC Nationals, where they came in second overall with three race wins. They then moved down to Kinsale for the Sovereigns Cup, where they had no race wins, but consistently good results over eight races, earning them overall victory in Class 1. At the Skerries Regatta, they won all before them. Our photo shows Pat collecting the Rockabill Cup

Brian Wayte 1938 - 2010
Brian Wayte died on Wedesday 27/1/2010 after a short illness. Brian had many friends but to us he was an evergreen snooker player who spent many enjoyable nights in the Club over the past ten years. His love of the game was obvious and he will be rembered fondly by all his friends. One of the distinctive features of his snooker game was that whenever he potted a red he would search out the black, even if he was snookered on it and had an easy blue or pink. He had a great sense of camradarie and always enjoyed a good social occasion. He made a great effort to join his snooker team colleagues during a recent league game in Skerries and both teams were very pleased to see him. He will be sadly missed by his family, snooker colleagues and friends.
May he rest in peace.
Mermaid Youth Championships 2009

The Toppers event on the 19th and 20th September were a great success, with a total of forty competitors. Congratulations to Finn Lynch of Blessington Sailing Club (see Photo), who won the overall prize in the Full Rig Class and to Alison Dolan, also from Blessington S. C., who won the 4.2 Rig Class. For full results see the Fixtures page, pictures of all six races and the prizegiving on the Gallery page.

Junior update - another triumph for Rush at the Mermaid Youth Championships
Five of the juniors from Rush SC took to helming Mermaids for the Mermaid Youth Championships on Saturday 12 September, in glorious sunshine with light winds. Along with other participants from Skerries and Foynes clubs, the Rush juniors, Ciaran Hand, Cameron Mc Crum, Megan Kelly, Clara Hynes and John Rooney acquitted themselves excellently in the Mermaids, some being in this type of boat for the first time! Other Rush youth members who participated were Sean White, Eoin Butterly, Alan Butterly, Cara Mc Auley.
After two races Clara Hynes on helm, with Jim and Muriel Carthy as crew, emerged victorious and received the Mermaid Youth Championship trophy from Martin Reddin, Vice Commodore. Well done to Clara and her crew. Congratulations also to Eoin Butterly who won the Under 18 Peter O'Rourke Junior trophy on the day.
Many thanks to the owners of the Rush Mermaids who encouraged the juniors to participate and had the courage to put the boats at their disposal!
Rush Junior Pico Winner at Sutton !
Congratulation to Ciaran Hand who participated in his first ever regatta in Sutton Dinghy Sailing Club last weekend and wiped the board. He came first in one race and second in the other, thereby winning the overall pico class prize. Competitors came from Howth, Royal Irish and Royal St George sailing clubs. A full list of results can be seen Here
During July, Sean White, Clara Hynes and Cameron Mc Crum took to the water in Dun Laoghaire for the Leinster Laser Championships - a two day event on the 18 and 19 July. They participated in 3 races each day with 150 boats taking to the water. Clara got 37th place and Cameron got 49th place in the 4.7 class with Sean achieving 40th in the Radial class. A full set of results can be seen Here
Congratulations to all three for these great achievements and for the stamina to stay the course.
In addition, John Rooney participated in the mermaid class in the Skerries Regatta along with one of our youngest junior members, Mallaidh Boarman who operated as a vital third crew member to her daddy Patrick.

Juniors News - More Juniors Success
The junior sailors were out in force last weekend. Three of them (Sean White, Clara Hynes and Cameron Mc Crum) headed to Lough Derg Yacht Club for the four day National Laser Championships. Unfortunately the weather was very tricky and only one race took place on the first day, Thursday after which racing was abandoned. Friday brought another tricky weather day and again no sailing took place. Cameron had to leave Lough Derg then (as he had an important cricket match on Sunday) but Clara and Sean were able to take to the water (at last!) on both Saturday and Sunday.
Sean finished 24th (out of 66) in the Laser Radials and Clara finished 43rd (out of 55) in the 4.7 class- excellent results and well done to both.
Meanwhile on Saturday in the Malahide Yacht Club dinghy regatta, a number of Rush SC juniors took to the water. Ciaran Hand in his pico, Cameron Mc Crum and John Rooney in lasers and Noelle Leonard and Lisa Coleman in a feva. Despite the drop in water levels over 90 boats participated.
Rush SC were delighted to pick up some silverware - Cameron came 2nd in the 4.7's and in their first regatta ever, Noelle and Lisa picked up plaques for second place in the feva. Ciaran and John both also put in very credible performances.
Excellent work all round and well done to all!
