2009 REGATTA WEEKEND

In spite of seriously un-promising weather, the Regatta turned out to be a great success. A stiff off-shore breeze made for challenging conditions for the Mermaid open on Saturday and even more so for the Juniors who were competing in Lasers, Picos and a Viva. This was the first time the juniors have been represented in Regatta sailing for some years, so congratulations are due to all concerned.

John Rooney sailed a storm in his Laser to finish first
in the Laser class, followed by Clara Hynes.

In the Picos class, Brian Carthy soldiered on where the feint hearted did not dare.
It really was very tough out there, so hats off to anyone who had the courage to keep going!

In the Mermaid Open, there were a few breakages early on Saturday, but things settled down to some seriously exciting racing. In the second race, One of the boats from Foynes was on the wrong side of the line on the final minute of the start sequence, and did not go around the end of the line to start, and so was given an individual recall. By the time the race started, Paddy Dillon and crew were ahead of everyone else on the line, and incorrectly assumed that the recall flag applied to them!. Back they came after a perfect start on the line, to restart at the back of the fleet. Little daunted, they rounded the weather mark and up popped their spinnaker, where the early boats around the mark had not dared to risk it.

As a spectator on the committee boat, the rest of the race was a thrilling spectacle as Wild Wind tramped up through the fleet. They never put a foot wrong, handling the conditions with practiced polish, pulling off one of the most spectacular victories the Bay has seen in a long time. Jim Carthy was all set to give them a run for their money, but a spinnaker halyard let him down. There may have been a bit of luck in it, but it was a well deserved win from spectacular sailing by the crew of Wild Wind, a race that will be talked about for along time to come.

In the cruiser racing on Sunday, the Kelly Gang walked away with as expected, in spite of the best efforts of Matt Davis and crew in Barrafundle to get their own back after Storm swept the board at the Skerries Regatta. Second behind the Kelly’s is doing all right guys!

Noel Ruigrok’s Emeljia came in a very respectable third place on the line, beating Premier Cru. Mind you, he did have our illustrious Commodore on the rail to keep her upright in a gale!.

In very difficult conditions, Liam Dineen did a masterfull job as OOD, laying great courses, and getting everything going on time in spite of the heavy weather. The crack was great in the Club afterwards as well!

Congratulations to Paddy Dillon, Mermaid National Champion ‘09

Paddy Dillon and crew Johnny Dillon and Rory Grimes on Wild Wind are the 2009 National Champions. Paddy scored one first, three seconds and a third to emerge at the head of the fleet after five races. This is the fourth time that No. 131 ‘Wild Wind ‘has won the Nationals. Built in Dun Laoghaire in 1964, No 131 was originally named Paula. She won the National Championship in 1968, based on cumulative regatta results, and won again in 1970 and 1971 in the first two Mermaid weeks in Skerries and Wexford. Paddy renamed her when he bought her in 2007.

Enda Weldon in My Di also sailed a great championships, with crew Ian Price and Cara McGauley, just 0.25 of a point behind Roger Bannon. Congratulations also to Eoin Butterly who won the Crew Race for the second time in Anthony Carthy’s ‘Innocence’, ably assisted by Anthony himself and Marguerite Carthy. Pat Kelly Sailing a Storm!

Pat Kelly and his crew have been having great success in their new STORM a J109. After a few races on the east coast to get the hang of the boat, the lads (David, Paul, Patrick, Ronan, Mark, Kevin, Monty, Dave and Pat himself) headed down to Fenit for the IRC Nationals, where they came in second overall with three race wins. They then moved down to Kinsale for the Sovereigns Cup, where they had no race wins, but consistently good results over eight races, earning them overall victory in Class 1. At the Skerries Regatta, they won all before them. Our photo shows Pat collecting the Rockabill Cup
