On the 12th September, 2010 nine mermaids helmed by youths took to the water for the Mermaid Youth Championship. We were delighted to welcome the visiting boat from Skerries, helmed by Sinead Boylan, with the other boats helmed by Andre Berg, Alan Butterly, Eoin Butterly, Ruairi Grimes, Clara Hynes, Rian Kelly, Freya Mc Crum and Lynn White. Three races took place and it was a very hard fought battle but Eoin Butterly helming Innocence emerged the overall victor taking the Mermaid Youth Championship. Ruairi Grimes was runner up in Wild Wind with Andre Berg taking third place in Swallow. Andre was also awarded the Peter O'Rourke trophy for the highest placed Under 18 helm. Well done to all who competed. Many many thanks to the Mermaid owners who very kindly and willingly lent their boats and provided support to their helms on the day. Well done to all, in particular, Rian and Lynn who helmed for the first time together with the youngest helm of the day, Freya. We hope to everyone competing again in 2011. As usual particular thanks to the committee boat and OD's for the day, Jim Carthy and Aine Carroll assisted by Marguerite Carthy and Kevin Whelan. Thanks also to all who did rescue and helped on-shore particulary Ger Whelan, Mary Bollard and Ann Carthy.
Congratulations to Eoin Butterly, RSC on becoming the Mermaid Youth Champion. Full results Click here
The Mermaid season now finished with all boats returning to be repaired and renewed for the 2011 season.
Lasers
The Chill Factor Laser series began in earnest on Sunday 9 November, 2010 with 21 lasers, a topper and a feva participating on the first day. 34 sailors have so far expressed interest in the series so it promises to be a busy and challenging time in the river. Although there were predictions of a hurricane style storm approaching, the sun shone and three races took place under the watchful eye of OOD Jim Carthy assisted by Patrick Boardman, no mean feat keeping 24 boats in check. Competition was very healthy with no allowances made for age (young or old). As the wind was light there was great banter out on the water. Paddy Dillon led the charge on all three races followed closely by Aine Carroll, however there are many races between now and Christmas so watch this space!
The plan is that a series of races will take place before Christmas with prizes being awarded to both Under and Over 18 participants. A further series will take place in January / February and then a final series in March/April. The annual laser trophy will be awarded to the overall winner of the combined three series. Pat Kennelly has kindly offered to manage the results using the Portsmouth Yardstick system and results should be posted here weekly.
